Can AI help you turn a story idea into a screenplay?

The honest answer has two halves. Yes, AI can help you get from an idea to a finished script, and it can help substantially. No, it cannot take a sentence and hand you back a shootable feature, and if a tool claims otherwise, the thing it produces will be a script-shaped object rather than a script. The destination, at least, is published as a spec: Austin Film Festival's 2026 competition rules ask for approximately 90 to 120 pages in 12-point Courier for a feature — about two hours of story, in a document whose shape everyone downstream already knows.

The distinction matters because the work is not one task. Turning an idea into a screenplay is a sequence of conversions, each one lossy, each one requiring a decision that constrains everything downstream. An idea becomes a premise. A premise becomes a logline. A logline implies a shape. The shape becomes beats. Beats become scenes. Scenes become pages. At every step you are throwing away possibilities in exchange for specificity, and specificity is what makes a script playable. So the useful question is not whether AI can write your screenplay. It is where in that pipeline a capable partner earns its place, and where the decision is irreplaceably yours.

Stage one: from idea to premise

Most ideas arrive underspecified in a particular way. You have an image, a situation, or a feeling — a woman returns to the house where her mother died; two brothers find something buried under a barn; a translator starts mistranslating on purpose. None of these is a story yet. Each is a doorway. What turns a doorway into a premise is pressure. Who wants something badly enough to act, what stands in the way, and why now rather than a year ago or a year from now. This is the stage where thinking out loud is worth more than drafting, and it is the stage where an AI partner is most immediately useful — not because it knows your story, but because it will generate the variations you are too close to see.

Take the translator. Ask for ten reasons a translator might start altering meaning on purpose and you will get a spread: to protect someone, to sabotage a deal, to test whether anyone is listening, out of contempt for the source text, because they are being blackmailed, because they are losing their grip on the second language. You will reject eight of them immediately. That rejection is the work. The two that snag on something are the ones that carry your actual interest, and you would not have found them as quickly staring at a blank page.

The decision that stays yours: which version of the premise you are willing to spend months inside. A machine can enumerate. It cannot tell you which one you will still care about in the seventh week.

Stage two: the logline as a load test

The logline is often treated as a marketing chore done at the end. It is more useful as a structural test performed early. If you cannot state your story in a sentence that contains a protagonist, a want, an obstacle, and a stake, the problem is rarely the sentence. It is usually that one of those four elements is not yet decided.

This is where an AI partner does something people underrate: it will produce your logline back to you in a form you did not intend, and the mismatch is diagnostic. You describe your premise, you get a logline, and you find yourself saying "no, the sister isn't the antagonist, the estate is." You have just learned something about your own story from an incorrect draft. Wrong versions are cheap here, and cheap wrong versions are how you locate the shape. Stage three: beats, and the temptation to skip them

Beats are where the pipeline most often breaks, because this is the point at which people want to start writing pages. Pages are fun. Beats feel like homework. But a beat sheet is the cheapest place in the entire process to discover that your second act has no engine. A beat is a unit of change: something is true at the start of it and no longer true at the end. Not "Mara goes to the house" but "Mara plans to sell the house in a week and discovers her brother has been living in it." The first is a location. The second is a turn.

Here an AI partner contributes in a specific way: it holds the whole shape while you work on one piece of it. You can say the middle sags and ask what would have to be true at the midpoint for the back half to have momentum, and get four options that each imply a different film. One makes the brother sympathetic. One makes him a liar. One removes him and puts the pressure on a buyer's deadline. You choose, and the choice propagates — which is exactly why you want this to happen at the beat level, where changing your mind costs a paragraph rather than thirty pages.

What an AI partner should also do at this stage is remember. If you decided in week one that the mother's death was an accident and not a suicide, that decision should be a fact the drafting works from, not something you re-explain every session. A conversation that keeps agreements as records rather than as fading context is the difference between a partner and a very fluent stranger.

The decision that stays yours: what the story is about underneath the plot. Beats can be assembled correctly and still add up to nothing. The reason this house matters, the reason this brother is unbearable — that is authorial, and no amount of structural competence substitutes for it.

Stage four: scenes, where the script becomes specific

A beat says what changes. A scene says how, in a place, at a time, with people who want incompatible things and cannot simply say so. The conversion from beat to scene is the first point where craft becomes visible on the page, and it is the point where generated material most often goes generic. Generic scene writing announces itself: characters state their emotional condition, conflict is verbal and symmetrical, and everyone speaks in complete sentences of roughly equal length. Real scenes are lopsided. Someone talks too much. Someone answers a different question than the one asked. Objects do work that dialogue cannot — Daniel washing the chipped cup while Mara asks him when he moved in, and the cup being the reason he does not have to look at her.

AI is genuinely useful here in two directions. Forward, it will give you a serviceable version of a scene fast, which is often enough to reveal that the scene is unnecessary or that it starts three pages too early. Backward, it is a strong reviser: you select the passage where the confrontation goes flat, say the subtext has surfaced too early and Daniel should deflect for another half page, and get that change without the rest of the scene being quietly rewritten around it. That second mode is the one that matters for screenwriting specifically, because a script is a dense system. A line change in scene fourteen can contradict a setup in scene six. You want contradictions raised rather than smoothed over — a partner that says the shooting script established the brother had no key, so him letting himself in needs a fix, instead of inventing a key and moving on.

Stage five: pages, format, and the last mile

Screenplay format is not decoration. Scene headings, action, character cues, parentheticals and dialogue are semantic elements, and their arrangement on the page is what makes a script readable at speed by people who read a great many of them. It is also what lets page count stand in for running time — approximately, and with a known bias. When the film industry data analyst Stephen Follows matched 2,520 US Letter feature screenplays to the runtimes of the finished films in March 2026, the mean came out at 1.1 pages per runtime minute, so a page is nearer 55 seconds than 60, and only 18.2 percent of scripts landed inside the narrow band where the rule holds. Note too who sets the page limits: no guild agreement specifies a page count, and the 90-to-120 convention is enforced by competitions, fellowships and readers. The last mile is also where volume stops helping. A first draft assembled quickly still needs the pass where you cut every line that a competent actor would make unnecessary, the pass where you check that each character wants something in every scene they appear in, and the pass where you read it aloud and hear which speeches were written by someone who had already stopped listening. Those passes are slow and they are yours.

What realistic actually looks like

Here is the expectation worth holding. From a one-line idea, the first reachable milestone is a premise you believe in and loglines you do not hate. The next is a beat sheet with an actual engine in the middle, and it is worth having before a single page exists. From beats, scenes come at a pace that depends more on how clearly you can say what you want than on how fast anything generates. And the script that results is a draft — a real one, with your judgment in every structural decision and your ear in the dialogue you fought for. What you should not expect, and should not want, is a finished feature from a sentence. A script generated whole from a premise has no accumulated decisions in it. Everything is the first plausible option, which is why such scripts read as competent and feel like nothing. You would be signing your name to a set of defaults.

The pipeline is not a formula. It is just the order in which decisions become expensive. Make the cheap ones first, out loud, with something that argues back, and keep the expensive ones for yourself.
